The Pearl Of The Danube
Budapest, a vibrant city of 2,100,000 and the capital of Hungary, is considered one of the liveliest and most beautiful cities of all Europe. The Danube river is spanned by seven impressive bridges as it flows right through the heart of the city, forming a natural division line between the two principal areas of the city: residential and historic Buda on the hilly western bank and Pest, on the flat eastern bank where most cultural, entertainment and commercial buildings are located. A third area is Óbuda, just north of Buda, site also of the partially excavated ancient Roman town of Aquincum. The climate is temperate and sunshine is a dominant feature, except some rain and snow from November through February. July temperatures average 23-25°C while January temperatures average 2-4°C but sometimes fall to -10°C. English, German and French are spoken and understood in the main tourist areas.

Budapest has often been referred to as 'the Paris of Eastern Europe' because of its harmonious architechture broad avenues, and tree filled parks. The city is divided into two parts by the Danube river: the historic palace hill of Buda and the more modern and trendy Pest. The beauty of the city is imposing with the large, walled palace overlooking the more graded, pedestrian friendly side of the river that contains the sprawling senate and riverside trails. Budapest has something to offer for any tastes. The castle grounds and underground system of labyrinths are by far the premier area for tourists and sightseers, particularly with the numerous museums contained in the Palace itself. Budapest is also renowned for its hot springs and is a wonderful place to indulge in one of the traditional spa pamperings without spending the traditional spa prices. Days have plenty to offer, but the nightlife in Budapest is hard to match. From laid back jazz venues and expat hangouts to hopping clubs and underground sound without licensing laws, any night owl will be sure to find a good time. Situated in the southeast area of Central Europe, Budapest is an excellent location to strike out and explore from. Vienna and Bratislava are just a boat trip away and the rail and bus systems in and around the city are efficient and inexpensive ways to get around.

In 1996 Hungary celebrated the 1100 year anniversary of its statehood and the millennium of Hungarian education. Hungary, with a population of 10.7 million, is entirely landlocked and bordered by Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Rumania, Yugoslavia, Croatia and Slovenia. Distance of major European and Middle Eastern cities: Vienna, 248 km; London, 1,732 km; Rome, 1,294 km; Athens, 1,576 km. Lake Balaton, the largest lake of Central Europe, is a recreational center about 2 hours by car from Budapest. Eastward from Budapest stretches the Great Plain, the Puszta, a region noted for horse breeding farms and sheep raising.

Several universities in Hungary already have in place cooperative programs of higher education by arrangement with many European and American universities. Groups of students from other American and European universities come to Hungary on special study tours. Professional societies have frequently selected Budapest as a convention locale, such as the International Union of Physiological Sciences, the International Cancer Congress, the XXI. International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology and the l2th World Congress of Academic and Environmental Pathology ( 1996).

Budapest is a cosmopolitan city with a centuriesold tradition of excellence in the arts. The city has numerous treasure-laden museums of fine and applied arts with valuable collections of European and Hungarian artists as well as historic artifacts. Almost every night there are instrumental, symphony and choral concerts, ballet, classic opera, operettas, folk music, folk dancing, modern and Dixieland jazz performances. Rock bands and folk groups from other countries appear often. International sports competitions are frequently held in the 70,000-seat stadium, in the 12,000-seat arena and the Hungarians are avid soccer fans. Hungarian cuisine is acclaimed worldwide and the country's regional wines are much admired. In Budapest and in the countryside there are many restaurants ranging from small and cozy to elaborate and elegant.

All in all Budapest is a city with remarkable scenic beauty, a varied cultural life and outstanding hospitality.
